UGC vs Traditional Video Ads: The CPA Breakdown

UGC video ads consistently outperform traditional studio-produced video ads on cost per acquisition for direct-to-consumer brands in the accounts we've worked with. The gap widens further when creative refresh cycles, hook variant volume, and platform-native styling are factored in.

    TL;DR

    • UGC delivers lower CPA on cold traffic across Meta and TikTok in the accounts we've measured.
    • Traditional studio ads still win for retargeting, brand campaigns, and high-consideration purchases.
    • The right answer is usually a portfolio approach with UGC weighted toward prospecting and studio toward retargeting.

What we mean by each format

For this comparison we define traditional video ads as polished, scripted, studio-produced creative with an actor or hired model and brand-led art direction. We define UGC as creator-style, unscripted, lower-fidelity video, including street interview formats.

    What real accounts show

Rather than lean on generic industry averages, look at what happened when street interview UGC ran alongside other creative in real Meta accounts. In one account, five street interview ads took roughly a third of a €863,979.71 total account spend and returned a 2.73 blended ROAS against a 2.67 account average, purely because Meta's delivery system chose to push spend there. The client's other video creative in the same account was capped far lower by comparison. Full numbers are on our the client ad accounts.

In a separate account, a single day's street interview ads shoot in Birmingham produced ads generating 15,071 reported purchase events at a €1.41 blended cost per event, with the strongest individual ad reaching a €0.44 cost per link click.

"Meta decides where spend goes. If it pushes spend only to the street interview, we have to raise the budget until the rest of the ads get spend at all."

Why UGC wins on cold traffic

The mechanism is straightforward. Cold audiences scroll past anything that looks like an ad. Native, unscripted footage triggers the same attention pattern as organic content, which tends to lift the thumb-stop rate. A higher hook rate compresses CPM and CPA at the same time.

Variant volume matters more than asset polish

A studio shoot might deliver a small handful of hero assets. A UGC or street interview shoot can deliver dozens of variants from the same budget. More variants means more chances to find a winner, which is the only thing that matters for performance scale.

    Platform-native styling

UGC inherits the visual grammar of the feed it lives in: handheld, vertical, captions, jump cuts. Studio creative often imports a TV-era grammar that signals "ad" instantly to younger audiences.

    Where traditional video still wins

Studio video earns its place on three fronts. First, brand campaigns where consistency of art direction matters more than CPA. Second, retargeting, where viewers already know the brand and respond to higher-fidelity reassurance. Third, high-consideration products where production value signals quality.

If your brand sells luxury goods or B2B services, lead with studio. If you sell mass-market consumer goods, lead with UGC.

    The portfolio approach

The best-performing DTC brands do not pick UGC or studio. They run both. UGC carries the prospecting load with a regular refresh cadence. Studio anchors retargeting and brand consideration. Street interview formats, whether badged as street interview ads UK or man on the street ads, sit inside the UGC bucket as the highest-credibility variant when raw social proof matters most.

    FAQ

Is UGC always cheaper to produce?

On a per-variant basis, usually. On a per-day basis, a high-end UGC or street shoot can cost as much as a studio day, but it tends to produce far more usable assets.

How often should we refresh UGC?

Most brands refresh regularly, before fatigue compounds. Some categories tolerate longer cycles, but waiting until CPA spikes is too late.

Does UGC work for premium brands?

Yes, but with more art direction. Premium brands often use UGC for prospecting and lean on studio for retargeting and brand-led campaigns.

    Can in-house teams make UGC?

Some can, but consistent volume is hard. Brands scaling on paid social often partner with a specialist agency instead.

How long is the test cycle?

Agree the testing period with your agency up front, and plan for enough time and budget in-platform to reach a real read on CPA before drawing conclusions.
